Housing crisis on contemporary screens: views of and from the periphery
Main Article Content
Abstract
In October 2025, the Spanish Film Library and the Círculo de Bellas Artes programmed a series entitled ‘A planet of tenants. The right to decent housing’ (Spanish Film Library, 2025). A few months later, to celebrate 2026, the Madrid Film Library responded with another series, ‘Machines for Living’ (Film Library, 2026), which once again addressed similar issues through films that explored urban space in its individual (a room) or collective (the neighbourhood) dimensions. And a few months earlier, in November 2025, a special premiere was organised in cinemas for the 200th episode of La que se avecina (Telecinco/Prime Video, 2007-), a long-running television series based on a humorous take on a block of flats on the outskirts of Madrid. These three small examples reflect the centrality that issues of housing and the housing crisis, linked to the transformation of urban spaces, have acquired in recent times in discourses on and around the audiovisual media (i.e., in their production, exhibition and reception).
