Abstract

«Intertextuality», a new widespread term in Literary Theory, was coined in 1967 by Julia Kristeva. Since then, it has been used with various meanings and, still today, it is in common use. This article is an attempt to clarify the issue organizing the different meanings of the term «intertextuality» as it has been used by different authors or schools: the Marxist dimension (Kristeva herself and Bajtin), the formal dimension (Genette, Plett, Martínez Fernández or Segre), the cybernetic use of «hypertext» by Nelson, etc. Abundant examples are presented on its consideration at different moments and on its limits with plagiarism.
