Abstract
We are facing a cruel dichotomy: millions of tons of food being wasted every year while millions of people are suffering from hunger globally. Thus, reducing food loss and waste becomes a global priority. Major changes in the agrifood system are required, but they may never impact negatively on vulnerable stakeholders: small farmers, agrifood workers or rural communities, among others.
On the basis of the current necessities and vulnerabilities tackled by the agrifood sector, the ZeroW project proposes a ‘just transition’ approach to bring about a paradigm shift: transforming the agri-food system towards the imperative reduction of food loss and waste without leaving no one behind. This paper presents the first findings achieved within the framework of ZeroW, evidencing that the transformation process requires equity, fairness, the identification of vulnerable stakeholders on each stage of the food supply chain and a deep analysis of the necessary changes and their prioritisation.
Keywords: Just transition, vulnerable stakeholders, circular economy.
