Applied linguistics and gender perspective Recovery and translation analysis of Herland (1916) by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

Abstract
One of the research areas in applied linguistics, and specifically in the field of translation, is the recovery of works by female authors lost in the predominantly male literary canon (Castro Vázquez, 2008, p. 288). The aim of this article is to analyse Charlotte Perkins Gilman's (1860-1935) novel Herland and its translations into Spanish from the perspective of applied linguistics with a gender perspective. In this work, the author creates a feminist utopia in which three American researchers find a land inhabited only by women. This study analyses the four Spanish translations following the proposal of Newmark (1988), the general translation techniques of Molina and Hurtado (2002), and the feminist translation techniques of Castro Vázquez (2008) and Martínez and Frasquet (2015). The results indicate that the translations of this work have not been carried out with feminist translation techniques, despite the particularities of the narrative and its author. Instead, literal and amplification translation techniques predominate, which do not always convey the full meaning of the source text. It is also necessary to draw attention to the lack of critical studies on the work of Charlotte Perkins Gilman.
