Abstract
This book review examines the key contributions of Villanueva-Jordán’s 2024 book Traducción audiovisual y teleficción queer. Teoría y Metodología. Combining an interdisciplinary framework with a clear pedagogical orientation, the author brings together core theories of translation and sociosemiotic approachesto multimodality to explore how gay masculinities are represented through translation in Spanish-language versions (both European and Latin American) of the TV series Looking. Conceiving each version as independent intersemiotic moments, the analysis discusses how these representations may conform to heterosexual norms, contribute to the emergence of global heteronotmativity, or foster critical debates on queer identities within multicultural contexts that promote collective identities grounded in difference. The book’s didactical dimension also offers insight to diverse research methodologies within Descriptive Translation Studies, particularly in the field of Audiovisual Translation. This review critically assesses Villanueva-Jordan's contributions with a particular focus on their significance in the fields of Gender and Translation and Queer Translation, situating the work within the broader context of contemporary knowledge production in these areas.
