Abstract

This article seeks to accomplish an intertextual study of two important architectural allegories from late-medieval and Renaissance Spanish literature: the "Cárcel de Amor" in Diego de San Pedro’s sentimental romance Cárcel de Amor (1492), and the "Casa del Amor" in Bernardo de Vargas’ book of chivalry Cirongilio de Tracia (1545), built up after the mode! of San Pedro's work. Through the analysis of different elements involved in the morphology of each allegorical edifice it is possible to establish a group of common features, but also a series of significant oppositions that can be summed up by the antithesis pathetic allegory (Cárcel de Amor) vs. glorifying allegory (Casa del Amor), according to contrasting psychologies and missions of the main heroes.
