Abstract

This paper approaches one of the best known poems by the Scottish writer Walter Scott, the creator of the historical novel. It is based (similarly to his contemporaries Lanodor and Southey) on the legendary story of the lasy Gothic Spanish King, Don Roderick. After a brief review of Don Roderick's figure within the context of Spanish literary history, we proceed to analyse in detail the treatment of the Gothic King in English Romanticism, and finally we focus on the Spanish translation in verse by Agustin Aicart (1829), where he does not attain to a concrete metric scheme.
