The representation of colloquiality in a contemporary young adult translation Analysis of "Asesinato para principiantes" (2020), by Holly Jackson
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article explores the representation of colloquiality in Asesinato para principiantes (2020), whose original is A Good Girl's Guide to Murder (2019), a work by the british author Holly Jackson. The work proposes a qualitative analysis that asks to what extent does a contemporary translation insist on recreating this indispensable part of the common language and what resources does it use in order to achieve it. Specifically, the analysis identifies and describes the main features of colloquial language, fictive orality and slang: all characteristic elements of the text and, after all, the main constituents of colloquiality in the written medium. Broadly, the study reveals the translation of these phenomena gathers options of common and current use in peninsular Spanish, by prioritizing a functional transfer which, in result, maintains an equivalence of the aesthetic effect and provides the target reader with an analogous reading experience to that of the original reader.
