Abstract

Being involved in leisure activities has many advantages for older adults’ health and well-being. Nevertheless, there are many aspects that can determine the level of participation in leisure activities, such as the context where people live, gender and their mental and physical health status. Due to it the aim of this study was, on the one hand to analyse the influence of the urban or the rural context, gender and depression on the level of leisure activities participation, and on the other hand to test the mediational role of health status in the link between depression and leisure activities participation. A total number of 139 older people (Mage= 69.16; SD= 9.64) answered an ad hoc questionnaire that includes the different instruments used. Results showed that women and people living in rural areas have a higher rate of leisure participation. The mediation analysis showed that a 58.3% of the negative effect that depression had on participating in leisure activities is due to the influence of perceived health status. These results could be useful for the design of strategies aimed at increasing older adults’ level of leisure participation.
